Abstract

1305224 Injection moulding cellular articles IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [6 Feb 1970] 5792/70 Addition to 1156217 Heading B5A A process for making laminar articles having a foamed core surrounded by an unfoamed surface skin, comprises injecting a charge of an unfoamable synthetic resin composition into a mould cavity and subsequently, but before the central portion of the unfoamable composition has set, injecting a charge of a foamable synthetic resin composition containing a blowing agent to within the first charge at such a temperature that the foamable composition would normally foam but under such pressure that the mould cavity is filled without foaming occurring, then enlarging the mould cavity to allow the charge of the foamable composition to foam, at least one of the synthetic resin compositions being or containing a thermosetting resin. The first or second charge may consist of thermoplastic material in which cases the second or first charge respectively consists of or contains a thermosetting material. A reciprocating screw type injection moulding machine may be used. When the required amount of the unfoamable composition has been introduced to the front of the injection barrel of the machine, the required quantity of the foamable composition is built up behind the unfoamable composition and the compositions are injected into the mould. A second charge of the unfoamable composition may be injected into the mould after the foamable composition. At least part of one or more walls of the mould cavity may be lined with a removable insert prior to injection. The surface of the mould may be textured to impart a surface finish to the moulded article. The thermosetting resin may be undergoing cross-linking during and/or after injection into the mould. Numerous examples of suitable moulding compositions and blowing agents are given.
