Abstract

1,247,911. Moulding foamed plastics. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 14 July, 1969 [25 July, 1968], No. 35609/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C3] Articles having a foamed case with integral unfoamed surface skins are made by injecting an unfoamable synthetic resin into a mould and then injecting a synthetic resin containing a blowing agent to within the unfoamable resin under such conditions that foaming is prevented in the mould, the moulding is allowed to cool until it is below the temperature at which foaming would take place under atmospheric pressure, removed from the mould and shaped under such conditions of heat and pressure that the blowing agent is activated to foam the core of the moulding. The unfoamable resin may be polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride polyethylene, polybutene, poly-4-methyl pentene-1, polymers of styrene or methyl methacrylate, or polyethylene terephthalate. The foamable resin may be the same as or different from the unfoamed resin. The moulding may be shaped by vacuum forming and only selected areas may be foamed by applying pressure to the areas which are not to be foamed while the moulding is heated to the foaming temperature. A second amount of unfoamable resin may be injected into the mould after the foamable resin.
