Abstract

1397639 Cutting apparatus E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 15 Aug 1972 [16 Aug 1971] 38013/72 Heading B4B [Also in Division B8] In a method of, and an apparatus for guiding the leading edge of a web 10, e.g. plastics film, to a winding device 60, the web travelling along a path P1 is slit longitudinally, by a pair of movable knives 21 mounted on a carriage 22 movable upwardly by a pneumatic actuator 23, to form a leader strip from the middle of the web, the strip then being cut by a pointed blade (35), Fig. 3 (not shown), to produce a V-shaped leading edge whch is drawn into a pneumatic conveyer 40 defining a path P2 leading to the winding device. When winding has been initiated, the knives 21 are moved apart, towards the web edges so that the strip is broadened out into the full width web.
