Abstract

A method for the dry treatment of a fabric 1 in which a fabric reciprocates between an inlet fabric stack 2 and an outlet fabric stack 8 through a duct 4. Currents of air of an appropriate temperature directed through the duct 4 determine the alternate movements of the fabric, the fabric is supplied gradually to the inlet pile and withdrawn gradually from the outlet pile. The apparatus for carrying out the method comprises chambers for the fabric stacks connected by a duct and a fan 12 and injectors for the air currents. The fabrics may be aged, creped, softened and shrunk; woollen fabrics may be felted, softened and dimensionally stabilised. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Method and apparatus for the dry treatment of fabric The invention relates to a method for the dry treatment of a fabric and to an apparatus for carrying out the method, particularly for drying and/or finishing the fabric and is applicable to all fabrics, such as cotton, woollen, man-made fibre, blends, knitted fabrics and others.
Up to the present, the drying and/or finishing operations were performed with the known flat stenter frame, storied stenter frame, batch tumbler, continuous tumbler, contact drum drier, perforated drum drier, sanforizing machine, bag drier, roller drier with zig-zag cloth passage and roller guide fabric drier systems, among others.
The method of the present invention, which allows the results obtained by the above described systems to be improved upon, by not introducing tension into the fabrics being treated, is characterised in that a fabric is made to move from an inlet fabric stack to an outlet fabric stack through a duct by the passage of air through the duct.
Preferably the fabric is made to move alternately from the inlet fabric stack to the outlet fabric stack, through the duct to which there are connected air injectors causing the movement from one pile to the other with the consequent drying and/or finishing of the fabric, the fabric generally being gradually fed to the inlet pile and gradually removed from the outlet pile. In the method of the invention the air produces movement of the fabric as well as drying and/or finishing the fabric.
In turn, the apparatus for carrying out the above method as characterised in that it comprises an inlet chamber for an inlet fabric stack and an outlet chamber for an outlet fabric stack, a duct connecting the two chambers, means for blowing air along the duct in an inlet to outlet direction.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the apparatus comprises two chambers, one for the inlet pile and the other for the outlet pile of the fabric, a duct connecting the two chambers with each other, a fan means, heating elements for the fan driven air, two sets of injectors adapted to allow the said air to enter in the duct, and gates regulating the direction of air flow towards one set of injectors or the other, for moving the fabric within the duct alternately during the fabric drying and/or finishing process.
The invention is also characterised in that the air injectors are situated in slots transverse to the duct connecting the chambers.
Also according to the invention, the alternate movements of the fabric and the speed of such movements are determined by appropriately located sensors for controlling the fan means, the heating elements and the gates.
In an optional development of the invention, the duct connecting the chambers is arcuate with two vertical end portions and an upper central portion, the corresponding slots for one of the injector sets for the fabric moving, drying and/or finishing air being located in each of the end portions.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the duct connecting the two chambers is either flattened to admit the fabric open or cylindrical to admit the fabric in rope form.
The apparatus may comprise means other than the air injectors for moving the fabric between inlet and outlet fabric stacks but preferably the movement of the fabric is produced solely by the air currents.
The invention is further illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which the sole Figure is an elevation view schematically showing an apparatus for the drying and finishing of fabrics.
In accordance with the method of the invention, a continuous fabric is alternately moved between two piles, through a duct in which there flows air at a controlled pressure and temperature, whereby the fabric moves in both directions for its drying and finishing process. Such movements are suitably produced by the air itself, according to a programme, such that the fabric slowly enters the first chamber and is gradually removed from the second chamber towards the final take-up or folding station.
Briefly the apparatus comprises inlet and outlet chambers for the fabric situated in respective stacks, connected by a flat section duct to admit the open width of the fabric and means for generating currents of air for transporting the fabric backwards and forwards until the drying and/or finishing process is completed.
The duct connecting the chambers may be straight, in the form of a flat horseshoe, arcuate or have any other shape. In the embodiment illustrated, it is arcuate, whereby the apparatus for treating a continuous fabric 1 comprises an inlet chamber 2 where the fabric enters and is deposited in a stack 3, an arcuate duct 4 of flattened section, comprising a vertical end portion 5, an upper central portion 6 and a vertical end portion 7, an an outlet chamber 8 in which the fabric 1 is deposited in a stack 9. The duct 4 is flattened for allowing the fabric to move therethrough in open width form, although it may have other shapes, for example, be of circular section to allow the fabric to move in rope form.
The said end portions 5 and 7 are provided with transverse slots 10 and 11, respectively, with sets of injectors for directing air currents to dry and/or finish the fabric 1, generated by a fan 1 2 and heated by heating elements 13, forming a means located in the central space of the apparatus. Said air currents are distri buted alternately along two branches 14 and 15, provided with respective gates 1 6 and 17, opening into the respective portions 5 and 7. The said gates are controlled by a programmed control device so that the fabric 1 may be moved between the chambers 2 and 8, transported by the air flowing through the slots 10 and 11, in which run the drying and finishing is performed.
The gates 1 6 and 1 7 alternately direct the air towards the portion 5 or 7 according to the set programme relative to the speed and number of movements in each direction, depending on the type of fabric and degree of humidity thereof. At the same time, the apparatus receives and removes fabric, so that the fabric is supplied to the inlet chamber 2 by mechanical means such as guide rollers 1 8 and drive rollers 19, whereas the fabric is removed by further guide rollers 20 and drive rollers 21, all situated in spaces adjacent the duct 4.
The movements of the fabric 1, as well as the operation of the fan 12, heating elements 1 3 and gates 1 6 and 1 7 are controlled by sensors appropriately mounted in the apparatus.
As it moves through the duct 4, the fabric 1 is free from mechanical stress and harmful rubbing, since such movements are carried out practically without contacting the walls of the portions 5, 6 and 7, the fabric being transported in one direction or another by the air blown through the respective slots 10 and 11. The drying and finishing performance is very high and effective, at the same time as the fabric 1 is relaxed.
The following forms of finishing may be achieved: cotton fabrics may be aged, creped, softened and shrunk; woollen fabrics may be felted, softened and dimensionally stabilised; all the types of finish corresponding to each type of fabric may be obtained with the blended fibre fabrics.
The apparatus described is built basically in modular form, allowing one or more modules to be operated to obtain a more energetic operation as required by each fabric. In this respect, two or more modules may be connected in series in such a way that the fabric gradually enters the inlet chamber of the first of said modules, reciprocates between this chamber and the outlet chamber of the same module and thereafter forms a new stack in the inlet chamber of another module and is finally removed gradually from the outlet chamber of the last module. In this way the fabric may be treated several times with the same operation or with successive different operations.
