The slots 11, 12 are simularly inclined with respect to the direction of rotation so that the position in which material enters a given slot is circumferentially in advance of the position in which it leaves it. The slots 11, 12 may be formed in rings 8, 9 on the discs 1, 5, which rings have cylindrical or frusto-conical axial surfaces, Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 (not shown), or slots 19, 21 may extend through the discs 17, 18, Fig. 4, the annular space lying axially between the discs 17, 18. Also, Fig. 5 (not shown), a series of pairs of discs 17, 18 may be provided, and, in the case of the radial flow embodiment, screw means (15), Fig. 3 (not shown), may be provided for adjusting the disc spacing.
