Abstract
1361002 Roadway driving machines; dust suppression; goaf stowage COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 19 May 1972 [4 June 1971] 19033/71 Heading E1F Dust created by the cutting head of a roadway driving machine is prevented from entering ventilation air passing the machine on its way to a seam face 2 by providing the machine with a shield 14 which, when the machine is cutting, extends between the adjacent portions of the sides of the roadway and up to and beyond the face of the roadway so as to effectively seal off the dust laden zone at the roadway face. Preferably the sides of the shield are formed of resilient material, e.g., synthetic rubber, and the shield is pivotally supported by means on the frame of the machine and is swung about said means by a ram 6 when not supported by legs 17 provided at the leading end of the shield. Means can be provided for extracting dust from the dust laden air at the roadway face before the air is discharged into the ventilation air. The cutting head may be a boom-mounted rotary cutter drum 11 or an impact head. Mineral cut away from the face falls onto the shield and is pushed across the shield to fall through an opening in the shield into the path of a slusher system that packs material into the goaf adjacent the roadway. The mineral can be pushed forward across the shield into the path of a pusher plate secured on the underside of the boom by ram-actuated plates. A further ram-actuated pusher plate mounted on the machine below the shield pushes spilled material over the floor of the roadway into the path of slusher means.
