Abstract
706,026. Coal &c. cutting machines. RITCHIE, C. Nov. 13, 1951 [Nov. 27, 1950], No. 28914/50. Class 68(1) A coal &c. cutting machine 1 is connected to haulage means, which may be an endless cable or cables, and is drawn or reciprocated across a coal face, being guided thereagainst by the front panel of a coal-face conveyer (not shown), fenders 9 on the machine riding along the front top angle plate of said panel. The machine comprises a group .of stepped knives 2, arranged in a horizontal plane at successively increasing depths for forming a kerf in said face between floor and roof, and knives 3, 4 projecting upwards and downwards from said plane to remove mineral from above and below the kerf, the upper knife 3 cutting ahead of the lower knife 4. Ramps 5 guide the coal on to the conveyer. The individual knives are adjustable with regard to the depth of penetration into the face and project forward at an angle to the direction of travel of the machine to keep the latter against the coal face, whilst adjustable liners between the body of the machine and the conveyer regulate the depth at which all the cutters operate. So as to cut in either direction the machine may be formed of two pivotally. connected parts, one the mirror image of the other.
