Abstract

1348070 N,N - Diethyl - toluamide VIRGINIA CHEMICALS Inc 26 Oct 1971 [26 Got 1970] 49701/71 Heading C2C N,N - Diethyl - m - toluamide is prepared by (A) first reacting m-toluic acid with phosphorus trichloride while simultaneously draining waste products and thereafter raising the reaction temperature to complete conversion of the acid to m-toluoyl chloride; (B) charging an amidation reactor with the entire charge of diethylamine, thereafter gradually feeding portions of the m-toluoyl chloride into the reactor thereby forming N,N - diethyl - m - toluamide and the by-product diethylamine hydrochloride; (C) then alternately adding portions of aqueous caustic and fresh m-toluoyl chloride while maintaining the reaction temperature and agitating the mixture to liberate diethylamine from its hydrochloride salt for subsequent reaction with the fresh m-toluoyl chloride; (D) subsequently heating the product mixture to yield a crude organic layer; and (E) fractionating the crude organic layer to recover the N,N-diethyl-mtoluamide.
