Abstract

1344965 Thymol UNION RHEINISCHE BRAUNKOHLEN KRAFTSTOFF AG 21 July 1972 [7 Aug 1971] 34144/72 Heading C2C A process for the production of thymol comprises alkylation of m-cresol using propylene or a corresponding alkylating agent followed by isomerization of the reaction products in the presence of an acid catalyst, wherein the alkylation and isomerization are carried out in the presence of an aqueous catalyst solution containing zinc bromide or zinc chloride, thymol, isothymol if any and the resin-like residue are separated from the isomer mixture from which the catalyst has been removed and the residual mixture is recycled into the alkylation stage and wherein the alkylation is carried out at a temperature of from 100‹ to 140‹ C. and the isomerization at a temperature of from 150‹ to 170‹ C. An example is furnished.
