The feed roller device Z consists of a driven knurled feed roll 4 and a pressure member (not shown) which is urged towards the feed roll 4 by a piston and cylinder, the initial gap between the feed roll 4 and pressure member being determined by a stop screw. The adhesive applying device K includes a nozzle 22 which injects adhesive between the lasting margin and the insole. The wiper device B consists of a roller which is urged downwardly by a piston and cylinder (not shown), the initial position of the roller being adjusted by a knurled nut 15". The tacking device T includes a conventional tack sorter 30, driver mechanism 28 and tacking head 27. The tacking head 27 carries a guide roller (not shown) which engages the edge of the last as it moves past the working zone. The machine also includes a sensing device A (Fig. 4) which includes a light source 49, a reflector 24 positioned over the last, and a photoelectric cell 25. When the upstanding lasting margin interrupts the light beam between reflector 24 and cell 25 the adhesive applying device K and tacking device T are operated, these devices being stopped when the light from the reflector 24 reaches the cell 25. Alternatively the tacking device T may be controlled separately by a foot pedal (not shown).
