Abstract
1,140,448. Boots and shoes. J. S. KAMBORIAN. 14 Dec., 1966 [14 Jan., 1966], No. 56017/66. Heading A3B. [Also in Division B2] Apparatus for applying cement in a predetermined pattern in the comer between the bottom of a shoe insole and the projecting portion of a shoe upper in a shoe machine comprises a support member 132 (Fig. 6) spaced above the insole and mounted in the machine for heightwise movement towards and away from the insole, driving mechanism 120, 126 for imparting said movement to the support member, a cement applicator 136 mounted on the lower end of the support member and having a surface adapted to bear against the bottom of the insole and an outlet for distributing cement on abutment 200 on the machine located in the plane of movement of the support member, biasing means 202 which urges a surface of the support member continuously into engagement with the abutment, and a cam track 208 in said surface which co-operates with the abutment to guide the support member, when moved by the driving mechanism between a first position in which the cement applicator is remote from the shoe assembly and a second position in which the applicator bears against the bottom of the insole in a path determined by the configuration of the cam track. In the arrangement shown the driving mechanism 120 is an air motor operating a lever 126 to which support arms 132 are attached and the applicator 136 is attached to the lower ends of arms 132 for limited universal movement so as to bear evenly on the insole surface to which adhesive is to be applied. The cement applicator is shown as being used with the heel seat lasting machine described in Specification No. 1,096,553 and in operation after a shoe upper and insole have been supported in the machine with that part of the insole I (Fig. 11) to which cement is to be applied brought into engagement with the holddown 50 and with the upper U supported with a margin portion M ready to be wiped into contact with the insole once the cement has been applied, the motor 120 is operated to lower the applicator supports 132 to bring the applicator 136 into engagement with the insole. Due to the cam surface 208 and the biasing springs 202 the applicator moves rearwardly in its downward movement so indicated by arrows 210 for correct engagement in the corner between the insole I and the margin M. The rearward motion of the applicator can be governed by the abutment of the applicator with the upper margin M or with an adjustable stop bolt 214. When the applicator has become seated in flush abutment with the bottom of insole I cement is caused to be forced from a source into filling 178 of the applicator, through conduit 180, passageway 164, upper trough 158 and conduits 160 into lower trough 154, whereupon the cement fills the lower trough 154 and adheres to the insole I in a pattern determined by the configuration of the trough 154. After the bead of cement has been deposited the applicator is removed and the margin M is wiped down into contact with the adhesive by conventional wiping means.
