Abstract

1,088,053. Boots &c. MASCHINENFABRIK MOENUS A.G. Oct. 1, 1964 [Oct. 1, 1963], No. 38269/64. Heading A3B. [Also in Division F2] In a heel attaching machine the shoe is held in position by a last presser 54 which moves upwardly and a heel clamp 38 which moves downwardly and while so clamped a single fastener is driven through the insole into the heel. The heel clamp 38 is mounted on the piston rod of an hydraulic piston and cylinder 40 and consits of two side abutments 110 adjustably mounted on an inverted U-shaped member 100 and a tread plate 124 which can be adjusted heightwise by a nut 104, the angular position of the tread plate 124 being adjusted by screw 128. The shoe is initially supported by a nail driving sleeve which is secured to the end cap of hydraulic cylinder 34 and is surrounded by the last presser 54 which is carried by a hollow piston in the cylinder 34. The hollow piston contains a second spring loaded piston which carries the driver for the fastener, the area of the second piston being smaller than the hollow piston so that when pressure fluid is supplied to the cylinder 34 the last presser 54 moves upwardly to clamp the shoe against the heel clamp 38 (which has previously been lowered) and then the driver moves upwardly to insert the fastener. The machine includes a pounding-up device consisting of an oscillating hammer 142 driven by an electric motor 8 via a belt 144. The cylinders 34 and 40 are rotatably mounted in the machine frame by means of needle and ball bearings to enable the shoe to be rotated so that the hammer 142 can operate around the heel end of the upper. The machine also includes a nail drawing device (not shown) consisting of a contact rod surrounded by a conductive sleeve and a switching device so that the nail is heated electrically. This causes the material of the heel e.g. plastics material, to melt so that the nail can readily be removed.
