Abstract
1,200,833. Expansion joints. BROCKING- TON & SCOTT Ltd. 20 May, 1969 [25 May, 1968], No. 25102/68. Heading F2G. A pipe 14 closed at one end 17 is disposed within a pipe 12 so as to project beyond the ends thereof and annular metal bellows 10, 11 are secured to and extend respectively between one end of the pipe 12 and the pipe 14 and the other end of the pipe 12 and the pipe 14, openings 16 being formed in the pipe 14 between the positions at which the bellows are secured to that pipe to establish communication between the interior of the pipe 14 and the space between the two pipes, whereby the inner surfaces of the two bellows are subjected to the pressure within the pipes, the outer surfaces being subjected, in use, to atmospheric pressure. Outlet means lead from the space between the pipes 12, 14 to a pipe 21 which is fixed relative to and extends parallel to, or coaxial with, the pipe 12. The joint is such as to permit the flow of fluid introduced under pressure into the pipe 14 and space between the pipes 12, 14 to the pipe 21. As shown, a pressure vessel 19 fitted over the bellows 11 is attached to the pipe 12, and an outer casing 20 around the vessel provides an annular fluid passageway to the pipe 21; pipes 23 in the passageway establish communication between the atmosphere and interior of the vessel. The pipe 12 may move axially and laterally and angularly with respect to the pipe 14, but to hold the pipes in coaxial relationship guide rings or blocks may be attached to the interior of the pipe 12.
