Abstract

1297624 Caps for bottles METAL CLOSURES Ltd 27 Nov 1969 [9 Dec 1968] 58461/68 Heading B8T A closure blank for a glass container having both a conventional crown "finish" and external screw thread, is made of light gauge aluminium or similar ductile material, and comprises a skirt having an upper portion 2 and a lower portion 7 with a step 9 separating them, and a bead 8. The cap is radiused at 3, the radius being in the range 0.085 to 0.11 inches. A security band 10 is provided at the bottom of the skirt, and a sealing gasket 4. A tool for applying these closures comprises an outer ring 23, Fig. 5, which engages step 9 of the closure, inside which is a spring member 26 which acts on the radiused parts of the closure top and a member 25 which acts on the top itself. The tool applies downward and inward pressure on the radiused portion of the closure and, when spring 27 is compressed, pressure is applied to step 9. This causes the metal of the closure to be under tension and the gasket 4 to flow to form a seal. The pressure also reforms the step and portion 7 of the skirt into a tapered section, Fig. 4. Whilst the closure is under pressure, screw threads are formed in the closure by rolling, and the security band is secured to the bottle. Specification 974,564 is referred to.
