Abstract

975,865. Container closures. AMERICAN FLANGE & MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. March 4, 1963 [March 26, 1962], No. 8556/63. Heading B8T. A capseal, adapted to fit over and enclose an annular neck 17 of a container comprises a cap member of plastics material having a disc-like top and a stepped skirt, and a metal sealing ring 2. The cap member has a slightly inwardly inclined upper skirt portion 5 which serves to retain the sealing ring. When placed over the container neck, the stepped portion of the skirt, which constitutes a shoulder 6, sits on an annular head 18 of the neck. To effect rigid sealing the vertical wall 15 of the sealing ring is crimped inwardly thus deforming the inner surface of the lower portion 7 of the cap skirt against the wall of the container neck. The upper skirt portion 5 has a recess 8 which, when the cap seal is on the container neck, allows the skirt to be readily fractured immediately above the shoulder 6 and thus facilitates removal of the cap top. The upper rim of a screw-threaded bush 16 fitted to the neck of the container forms the annular head 18. The capseal may be used either with or without a separate screw plug, when the latter is employed a plug gasket 23, Fig. 9, is also used. The cap skirt is formed with an ear, or ears, 10 of which one is perforated at 12 allowing a label 13 to be attached.
