Abstract

1291740 Knitting-machines WARNER & SWASEY CO 12 May 1970 [19 May 1969] 22867/70 Heading D1C The dial of a multi-station cylinder and dial machine carries needles and associated jacks having two butts 30, 31 selectively positionable in either a knitting or welting track 41, 42 respectively. Alternate jacks are differently shaped to avoid interference (arbitarily referred to as "long" and "short" jacks) but function in a similar way and are selected by two electromagnetic selectors 60, each operative on one type only, at each station. The electromagnet comprises a coil 94 and a pivoted core 91 selectively attractable to magnets 95, 96 of opposite polarity. The core engages and displaces a slide 70 so shaped as to displace one of two rods 63, 64. The lower ends of the rods contact the jack and pivot the jack into the desired position. The jacks are recessed at 33, 34 so that they clear the depending rods of the adjacent selector. Alternate jacks are provided with recesses at different locations to recesses 33, 34 so as to avoid rods 63, 64. As applied to a 36 feeder machine organised to knit a four-colour reversible pattern the needles are selected to knit in one course and welt in the next. A complete cycle occupies two revolutions, with the central repeat overlapping both.
