Abstract
1278186 Cables STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 17 Dec 1970 59923/70 Heading H1A A method of manufacturing a coaxial cable of the kind comprising an inner conductor 2, dielectric 3, a metallic tape return conductor 4, with the longitudinal edges of the tape overlapping at 6, and a plastics sheath 5, comprises the steps of heating the return conductor by r.f. energy before or after application of the sheath, whilst applying external pressure in order to melt the outer surface of the dielectric and hence bring the return conductor and dielectric into more intimate contact, e.g. at 7. The return conductor can be copper and the dielectric and outer sheath, polyethylene. Bonding of the return conductor to the dielectric and/or sheath can be achieved by pre-treating the surfaces with a bonding agent. Alternatively, the surfaces may be treated with an agent preventing bonding of the various layers, if this is desired. The inner conductor may be solid copper or, as shown, a steel strengthening core 1 with a copper tape 2 thereabout.
