Abstract

1,172,483. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 15 Aug., 1968, No. 39011/68. Heading H1A. A moisture barrier for an electric cable is made by wrapping a metal foil 1, e.g. aluminium foil, around an insulated cable core and extruding a plastics sheath 3 over the foil layer. The foil is then heated, as by radio frequencies, whilst the plastics material is still hot, to raise the temperature of the metal/plastics interface so that bonding may be achieved. A plastics sealing strip may be inserted between the overlapping metal surfaces prior to the extrusion of the sheath. The plastics sheath may be thermoplastic or a material which becomes thermosetting on cooling.
