A combustible gas is made from a liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. fuel oil, by a partial combustion process in which part of the product gas is recycled to points at or near the point of injection 8 of the liquid fuel through a plurality of channels, e.g. pipes 5, surrounding the gasification zone 6. Air is delivered at 11, 12 to the burner and to a cooling jacket 2, and air, water, and further fuel may be delivered at 13... 15 respectively to one or more of the pipes 5, and the lines 13... 15 may incorporate means to control fluid flow.
