Abstract

1,136,469. Barrels made from staves. G. R. MORRIS, and A. D. MESSENHEIMER. 26 May, 1967 [27 May, 1966], No. 24548/67. Heading B8D. A barrel, which may be of square cross-section with rounded corners. Fig. 1 (not shown), is formed of heads and side walls of wooden staves that are quarter-sawn and have a thickness of ¥ to 1“ inches. The side walls have a croze 48 at either end in which an elastomeric bonding agent 56 is inserted. Adjacent staves are grooved at 22, 24 to receive a spline 20 having an adhesive layer 26 on its outer side so that the adhesive is not in contact with the barrel contents, e.g. whiskey. The adhesive may be an epoxy resin. The spline may be of oval or polygonal, e.g. rhomboid, cross-section, Figs. 7-9 (not shown); or the staves may be formed with one or more integral tongues. The barrel may be polygonal or circular in cross-section.
