A foldable hatch-cover comprises an even number, e.g. eight, of hinged panels or sections 1 to 8, Fig. 1, which when stowed in a space 9 adjacent one end of the hatchway are retained in a vertical attitude by skids 18 on the evennumbered panels 2, 4, 6, 8 resting upon inclined plates 19a, 19b, 19c and a curvilinear ramp 16, respectively, on either side of said space, the said plates and skids associated therewith being situated at differing horizontal distances, Fig. 5 (not shown), from a pair of ramps 12 that are aligned with a pair of rails or runways 11 on the outer sides of the hatchway coaming, which ramps and rails guide and support wheels or rollers 14, 17 on the panels 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 when the cover is moved on to, or off, the coaming. The ramps 12 guide and support rollers 15 on the odd-numbered panels 1, 3, 5, 7, while the cover is being folded or unfolded with the aid of cables 23, 25 attached to the panels 7, 8. To permit folding of the cover in the manner shown, the widths of the panels differ, hinges 21 between adjacent panels being arranged as shown. A roller 28 is mounted at the upper end of each of the ramps 12 to facilitate displacement of the panels on to, or off, the rails 11. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, the panel 1 includes a flange that abuts an edge 32 on an end portion 31 of the coaming adjacent the space 9 when the cover is unfolded, the ramps 12 having their upper ends adjacent said edge rather than the rails 11 so that the panels can be of somewhat greater width and smaller number for any given length of hatchway.
