A slueing, luffing conveyer mounted on a base 10 has four main parts: a rigid framework A, mounted for rotation about a vertical axis; a luffing boom B mounted on a pivot 26 with a retractable extension 11; a tail C mounted on a pivot 28 with a counterweight 12; and a tie D operatively connecting together the boom B and the tail C. The boom B has a conveyer belt 14 extending from a point beneath a feed hopper 16, while the extension 11 has a conveyer belt 18. The counterweight is such that it tends to cause the boom B to rise under all conditions. The boom B is luffed by a single acting hydraulic ram 20 connected so as to lift the tail C on its working stroke, the boom then being lowered. The perpendicular distance Rb, Fig. 2, of the tie D from the boom pivot 26 is greater than its perpendicular distance Rc from the tail pivot 28. The conveyer may be mounted to run on rails, Fig. 4 (not shown). When used for filling hoppers the retractable extension 11 is not necessary, in which case the outer end of the boom B may be bent downwards, Fig. 5 (not shown). The boom B may be provided with a depending detector (not shown) to bring control means or an indicator or alarm signal into operation on its meeting or being met by an obstacle such as the stack itself. The tie D may be non-rigid to safeguard the boom B against damage when positively held against being lowered while the tail C is being positively lifted.
