Abstract
1,184,700. Unloading ships. FRUEHAUF CORP. 4 Oct., 1967 [4 Nov., 1966], No. 45146/67. Heading B8E. A crane movable on rails 21 adjacent a dock edge 23 is adaptable to load or unload bulk material cargoes by a clamshell bucket, a magnet, a cargo hook, a scrap skip or containers by a lifting spreader. The crane comprises an apron 39 hinged at 43 to the superstructure and supported in a horizontal operative position by folding links 45 but raisable during movement of the crane by. ropes 47. A sheave trolley 75 and a hopper trolley 79 run on separate pairs of rails on the apron 39 and on a rearward extension 61. A movable bridge 87 is secured at its outer end to the framework 83 of the hopper trolley 79 and supports a telescopic boom 87 having a reversible conveyer 97. Conveyers 99, 101 can feed material from an elevator 115 to the reversible conveyer 97 and can feed material from the reversible conveyer 97 to a discharge conveyer 113 respectively. To load bulk material the crane is arranged as in Fig. 1 and material is fed from the elevator 115 to the conveyer 99 and thence via the conveyer 97 set to move the material outwards, to a loading shoot 93 and thrower 95 positioned in a ship's hold. To unload bulk material the shoot 93 is removed and a clamshell is attached to reeving on the sheave trolley 75 and is operated to lift material into a hopper 81 on the trolley 79 with a minimum horizontal movement from where it is discharged by the conveyer 97 operating inwards, the conveyer 101 and the conveyer 113. To load or unload containers the crane is arranged as in Fig. 7 with the trolley 79 and its attached bridge 87 retracted between the conveyers 99, 101 and moved rearwards on to the extension 61. A lifting spreader 119 is attached to the reeving of the trolley 75 and is operated to load and unload containers from the ship to the area 33 under the crane. For other cargoes the clamshell may be replaced by a magnet, a cargo hook or a scrap skip as required while when the crane is to be moved along the dock the bridge 87 is positioned as in Fig. 7 and the apron 39 is raised to a vertical position.
