Abstract

1,113,720. Sewing machines. SINGER CO. 23 May, 1967 [26 May, 1966], No. 23810/67. Heading D1G. A sewing machine thread tensioner comprises a plurality of tensioning discs, a leverage system operatively connected to means for pressing the discs together, means for applying a substantially constant predetermined force to a point on the leverage system spaced from said operative connection, and means for varying the mechanical advantage of the leverage system. As shown, a body 16, secured by a screw 28 to a sewing machine frame 10, has an annular wall 20 which passes through frame 10 and is concentric with a cylindrical portion 22 formed with a bore 26 in which is fixed a sleeve 54. Tensioning discs 62, slidable on sleeve 54 are compressed between the end of portion 22 and a disc 64 also slidable on sleeve 54. A spindle 56, journalled in sleeve 54, carries a handle 52 formed with a flange 68 abutting disc 64. A check spring 40, coiled on portion 22, has an intermediate thread-engaging loop 46 and its ends 42 and 48 are anchored to wall 20 and flange 68 respectively. Spindle 56 carries a pinion 88 meshing with a rack 72 formed on a fulcrum block 74 slidable in apertures formed in plates 78, 82 secured to body 16. A lever 89 engages a fulcrum point 76 on block 74, has a forked end 92 embracing a screwthreaded portion 58 of spindle 56, and a forked end 94 embracing a bolt 96 adjustable screwed into body 16. A spring 106, mounted on bolt 96 betweena head 98 and a collar 102, biasses the latter against end 94, whereby end 92 is biased against a pair of nuts 110, 112 screwed on portion 58 for pressing the discs 62 together. The force applied by spring 106 is constant, and the thread tensioning force is adjusted by turning handle 52 to vary the position of contact between fulcrum point 76 and lever 89. Alternatively, fulcrum point 76 may be fixed and spring 106 moved along the lever, or point 76 and spring 106 may be both moved along the lever. Spring 106 may be replaced by a weight or by an air cylinder.
