A cylinder-type chaff-cutter has a knifegrinding device comprising a grinding element slidable along a guide rail 4 parallel to the cylinder shaft, the grinding element and guide rail being adjustable with respect to the cylinder by means of a screw-threaded spindle 12 moving the device about a pivot 6 on the machine housing 7 parallel to the guide rail and cylinder shaft, the grinding device trailing in the direction of rotation of the cylinder and being loaded by a spring 17 against a supporting bearing 13 adjustable by the spindle. The guide rail 4 is of wedge shape and extends parallel to a tube 3 between a pair of side plates 1, 2 connected by the pivot 6 to the machine housing 7. The rail slidably receives the holder 5, Fig. 4 for the grinding element and has its lower face parallel to a tangent to the cylinder cutter so that, together with the trailing action of the device, damage to the grinding element is not affected during use. The holder 5 is resiliently held on the guide rail by a spring urged plate 21 and is movable along the rail by means of a handle 23. The device is urged towards the cylinder by the spring 17 and the position of the device is adjusted by the threaded spindle 12 which, at its upper end has a spherical collar 13 engaging a bearing collar 14 on the side 2 of the device. The lower threaded end of the spindle engages a nut formed with a spherical seating engaging a bearing collar in a rectangular or polygonal socket 8 secured to the machine housing. A collar of square or polygonal shape on the nut engages the socket to prevent rotation of the nut when the spindle is rotated by a handle 15 to adjust the device. The spindle can be locked by a nut having a towing bar 19.
