Abstract
843,076. Sewing machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 21, 1958 [Oct. 25, 1957], No.33559/58. Class 112 In a sewing machine thread-tensioning device having a tensioning-spring cover limited to a turning movement on its supporting spindle of one revolution, the cover is adjustably secured to a tension-adjusting nut, threaded on said spindle, by means comprising a shoulder on the adjusting nut and a clamping nut threaded on the adjusting nut for clamping said cover against said shoulder. A spindle 5, fixed to the machine wall 1 by a set screw 6, has an enlarged portion 7 which lies in a recess 3 in wall 1 and is formed with spaced longitudinal grooves 8. Thread-tensioning discs 15, 16, 17, the inner one 16 being flat and the outer ones 15, 17 being dished, are biased against the portion 7 by a coil spring 20. The inner end of spring 20,. which has a finger 21 seated in a longitudinal slot 22 in spindle 5, abuts a cover 23 held slidably but non-rotatably on spindle 5 by a transverse bar 27 in slot 22. Interposed between cover 23 and disc 17 is a guard plate 18 having an arm 19 slidable in an aperture in wall 1. The outer end of spring 20 abuts an anchor disc 28 held slidably but non-rotatably on spindle 5 by a transverse bar 30 in slot 22. Disc 28 abuts a flange 38 on a tension-adjusting nut 37 threaded on the end of spindle 5. A cover 33, arranged to telescope within cover 23, is clamped adjustably against flange 38 by a clamping nut 40 threaded on to nut 37. A set screw 43 in nut 40 engages the inner end of a sleeve 42 disposed between nuts 37 and 40, to tilt the sleeve and thereby lock the nuts together. A radial finger 31 on disc 28 coacts with a radial lug 32 on cover 33 to limit the turning of the latter, with nut 37, to one revolution. A check spring has an end finger 9 anchored in one of the grooves 8 of portion 7 of the spindle 5, a coiled portion 10 encircling portion 7, and a laterally-extending thread-engaging U-shaped portion 11 terminating in a loop that is coiled about spindle 5. A tension-releasing rod 44, slidable in a longitudinal bore in spindle 5, engages bar 27 to force cover 23 away from the tensioning discs.
