Abstract

1,185,684. False-twist crimping yarn. TURBO MACHINE CO. 18 May, 1967, No. 23014/67. Headings DID and D1F. In a false-twist crimping process, a yarn is false-twisted by passing the yarn helically over a rotating friction roller with the yarn rolling along the roller in an axial direction to maintain the points at which the yarn reaches and leaves the roller substantially constant. In one embodiment the roller which may be of soft rubber is rotated by the yarn and is adjustably mounted so that the helical angle of the yarn around the roller may be adjusted. In another embodiment the yarn is adjustably guided to and from a driven roller and is passed helically therearound, and is then wrapped several times around the roller in order to for the roller to act as the drive means for the yarn. In a third embodiment the roller is circumferentially grooved and guide pins extend into the grooves so as maintain the yarn's arrival and departure points constant. Upstream of the roller the yarn passes through a heater and optionally a cooler. The yarn may be a twisted or untwisted single or multi-end yarn of nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, or a copolymer of vinyl chloride.
