Abstract

1,182,702. Developing electrostatic images. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Sept.4, 1967 [Sept.6, 1966], No.40401/67. Heading G2H. An apparatus for developing electrostatic images comprises a reservoir 11 containing developer in the form of a toner suspended in a liquid carrier, a channel 9 having a slot 15 for applying toner to a web 4 traversing the slot, and a pump (12, Fig.1 not shown) to draw toner from the reservoir and hold the web in contact with the toner in the slot so as to develop electrostatic images on the web. As shown, the apparatus is applied to an electro-graphic recorder having a stylus (2) adjacent the dielectric surface of a paper web (4) to produce a latent electrostatic image on the surface according to an input signal applied through terminals (5). The channel 9, Fig.2, comprises a block of (Trade Mark) "Lucite" which provides a chamber 14 communicating with the reservoir 11 through passageway 16. The suction side of pump (12, Fig.1 not shown) is connected with the chamber 14, Fig.2 through passageway 20, such that the reduction in air pressure in the chamber 14 causes developer to be drawn up passageways 16. A by-pass valve 18 is opened to control the liquid level in the chamber 14 through a float 22, pivoted at 24, having a surface 25 engaging the valve 18. In another embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the pump is replaced by an air blower (31) the suction side of which is connected to chamber 14 and the exhaust side of which directs drying air on to the developed web (4). The developer used may comprise a 2% to 4% solution of toner concentrate suspended in an odourless paint thinner, e.g., Shell Solvent.
