Abstract
1,172,773. Moulds. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 24 July, 1967 [27 Oct., 1966], No. 33848/67. Heading B3F. In the investment casting of thin-walled castings in ceramic shell moulds 22 that are preheated in a metal container 12 packed with a ceramic granular material 26, distortion of the shell mould 22 by differential contraction forces 19 set up when the container and mould are taken out of a preheat furnace is prevented by providing a " cushion" " on the external lateral wall surfaces of the mould 22. The cushion may be provided by a layer 21 of woven and/or fibrous material, e.g. glass cloth, asbestos, glass wool, that can deflect and absorb the forces 19 and pads (21a), (Fig. 5, not shown) of a similar material may be placed between the layer 21 and the external walls of the mould. Alternatively a single coating of a flock-type material and binder may be sprayed on to the mould walls (Fig. 6, not Shown). The ceramic granular material 26 may include vermiculite and aluminium silicate (mullite) and the mould 22 may be produced by the " lost wax " process using a siliceous material. The mould is poured in a vacuum casting chamber.
