Abstract
1,034,368. Making refractory moulds. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Dec. 17, 1964 [Sept. 24, 1963], No. 37483/63. Heading B5A. In a method of producing a shell mould, a wax pattern is coated one or more times by dipping into a refractory slurry and dusting with a refractory powder each coating being dried by locating the coated pattern in a flask surrounding it with heated silica gel crystals or activated alumina and connecting the flask to a source of vacuum. The crystals may be compacted against the pattern by vibrating the flask. The slurry may comprise a water-based liquid binder mixed with a finely-divided refractory powder e.g. a solution of potassium or sodium silicate or of a silica sol mixed with a finely ground quartz, zircon, fused silica or alumina.
