Abstract
A composition for increasing the heat capacity of a ceramic shell mould by spraying the external surface of the mould therewith comprises a ceramic in the form of flock or fibrous particles with a binder therefor. A cellular coating is formed thereby. The particulate material may be silica fibres or fibrous particles of a fused aluminium silicate such as kaolin clay. The binder may be hydrolysed ethyl silicate, an alkali metal silicate solution, solutions of gum acacia or gum arabic or a mixture of gum acacia and silica sol. The mould may be fired to burn off the organic material of the binder and harden the coating.ALSO:A method of increasing the heat capacity of a ceramic shell mould comprises spraying the external surface of the mould with a ceramic in the form of flock or fibrous particles and with a binder therefor whereby a cellular coating is formed thereon. The particulate material may be silica fibres or fibrous particles of a fused aluminium silicate such as kaolin clay. The binder may be hydrolysed ethyl silicate, an alkali metal silicate solution, solutions of gum acacia or gum arabic or a mixture of gum acacia and silica sol. The mould may be fired to burn off the organic material of the binder and harden the coating.
