Abstract

1,172,001. Punching; stamping. W. BURROWS. 2 Feb., 1968 [9 March, 1967], No. 11039/67. Headings B3Q and B3W. An hydraulic tool, e.g. for punching or deforming eyelets, comprises a punch 1 detachably secured to the end of a piston-rod 2 extending through a die 3, a piston 4 on the rod and slidable in a cylinder housing 5 and a handoperable lever 6 coupled with a fluid-pressure pump 9 such that operation of the lever creates fluid pressure that displaces the piston to draw the punch towards the die. Upon operation of the lever 6, pressure fluid is pumped via a oneway ball valve 12 to the left end (as viewed in the Figure) of the piston, whereby the piston is urged rightwardly against the action of a compression spring 16. With each release stroke of the lever 6 fluid enters the pump 9 from the right end of the piston by way of a one-way ball valve 18. After the operation the piston is returned to the left end of the cylinder by opening a needle-valve (21) (Fig. 3, not shown), in a passage (20) interconnecting opposite ends of the cylinder, whereby under the action of spring 16 fluid is forced from the left end to the right end of the cylinder. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the right-hand end of the cylinder housing is sealed with an expansible bellows (27). The external left-hand end of the cylinder housing has a stepped formation 19, whereby dies of different sizes can be fitted, corresponding to the size of the punch selected.
