Abstract
1,163,967. Iron-base alloys; powder metallurgy; granulating. IIT RESEARCH INSTITUTE. Dec. 29, 1966 [Jan. 3, 1966], No. 58082/66. Headings C7A, C7D and C7X. An iron-base alloy consists, by weight, of Cr 14-16% Ni 6À5-7À75% Mo 2-3% A1 0À75-1À5% Mn up to 1% Si up to 1% C up to 0À09% S 0-0À03% Fe (and impurities) balance; the hardening phase of the alloy having a grain size less than 3 microns and being uniformly dispersed in the matrix which has a grain size less than 50 microns. The content of oxygen should be below 1, 000 p.p. m. and that of nitrogen below 100 p. p. m. The alloy is made by atomizing a melt with inert gas, the resulting particles being quenched in water. Consolidation of the particles is effected by encapsulating in mild steel cans and then sintering at 2550 -2690 F. ; or heating at 2190 F. and hammer-forging; or heating to 2200 F. and extruding.
