Abstract
1,149,114. Combustible gas. POWER GAS CORP. Ltd. 15 Feb., 1968 [24 Feb., 1967], No. 8914/67. Heading C5E. In a cyclic catalytic process for making a reducing gas which is at at least 950‹ C. and consists mainly of H 2 and CO by reacting fluid hydrocarbons with steam, the catalyst 6 is heated to a temperature not exceeding 900‹ C. and a regenerator 10 on the gas exit side of the catalyst 6 is heated to a temperature above 950‹ C. Two embodiments are described. In one (see Fig. 1), plant-heating is by burners 35, 42, 47, of which 35 consumes the major proportion of fuel, hot gases exiting through a waste heat boiler 13 to a stack 15. The required temperatures at 6, 10 are obtained by controlling the burners. For gas-making, steam and methane or natural gas are delivered by lines 31, 32, make gas exiting at 11, proportions of reactants and the space velocity being adjusted to give not more than 12 vol. per cent CO 2 and H 2 O in the make gas. Steam purging is from line 31. In the other embodiment, see Fig. 2 (not shown), line 32 is connected to the top of vessel 1, burner 47 is omitted, parts 12 . . . 16 are connected to the base of vessel 9, and a burner (66) at the top of vessel 9 is solely responsible for heating the regenerator 10. Liquefied petroleum gas or light distillate may be the feedstock in this embodiment. The same hydrocarbon may be used for the burners and as feedstock, and fuel and/or air for the burners may be indirectly preheated by combustion gases leaving the boiler. Two apparatus may be operated alternately to deliver a continuous supply of hot reducing gas to an iron ore reduction process, and effluent gas from the process may be used as fuel in the burners.
