Class 55 (2) In a cyclic process for making a combustible gas by the catalytic reaction at elevated temperatures of liquid hydrocarbons such as oils or tars or gaseous hydrocarbons such as refinery gas or natural gas with an oxidizing gas comprising steam and/or carbon dioxide and maybe air, each " make" period wherein the hydrocarbon and steam &c. is passed through the heated catalyst mass is followed by a two-stage heating period when air is supplied to burn off deposited carbon and to burn heating fuel when necessary, the air flow in the first stage being in the reverse direction to the flow of " make " gas and in the same direction in the second stage. The apparatus consists of a steam preheating regenerator 1, a chamber 8, containing a catalyst mass consisting, for example, of a mixture of nickel and iron oxides supported on magnesia or alumina, and an air preheating regenerator 13. During the "make" period, steam from pipes 2 and 4 enters the previously heated regenerator 1 to be superheated therein and passes into chamber 8 where it meets a spray of hydrocarbon oil from pipe 9, the steam and oil reacting in the catalyst mass to produce a permanent gas which passes up through regenerator 13, heating the checkerwork therein and discharges to storage through pipe 16. If gaseous hydrocarbons are to be treated they may be admitted with the steam to regenerator 1. At the end of the "make" period, air is admitted to the top of regenerator 13 through pipes 17a and 18 and is preheated therein before passing up through chamber 8 where it burns off the carbon deposited during the "make" and heats the catalyst mass. The resulting hot combustion gases pass down through and heat the regenerator 1 and discharge through a pipe 20. A further supply of air is then passed from pipes 17a and 23 through the plant in the opposite direction to burn any remaining deposits, the combustion gases discharging through stack valve 24. If an excessive amount of heat is generated during this phase, all or part of the hot gas may be diverted through a waste heat boiler 25. If, on the other hand, the combustion of the carbon deposits does not provide sufficient heat for the subsequent gas " make " reactions, a fuel, such as oil together with air, if necessary, may be injected into the apparatus through pipes 29, 30, 31 and 32 and burnt therein to make up the deficiency.
