Abstract

1,148,603. Brake cylinder. WESTING- HOUSE BREMSENUND APPARATEBAU G.m.b.H. 25 March, 1966 [27 March, 1965], No. 13357/66. Heading F2F. A vehicle brake cylinder comprises a diaphragm 7 defining a first chamber and adapted to displace a piston 9 and piston-rod 10 in the brake applying direction when compressed air is fed from a main service source to said first chamber through a first inlet 6 in service braking, a second chamber defined between said piston and a coaxial piston 8 and adapted to be fed with compressed air from an auxiliary source, through a second inlet 12, and through a bore 11 in the piston-rod to produce auxiliary braking on failure of service braking, and a third chamber 2 containing a piston 15 and provided with a third inlet connected to the auxiliary source, said piston being coupled with the piston-rod 10 and being retained by the auxiliary source supply pressure against the bias of a spring 16 so that on failure of the auxiliary source pressure the spring 16 moves the piston 15 and pistonrod 10 in the brake applying direction. The piston 15 is coupled to the piston-rod 10 by a sleeve 19. To obtain braking of the vehicle whilst parked, a valve 21 in the supply line to chamber 2 is actuated to cut off the connection to the auxiliary source and to vent the chamber 2. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 949,768.
