Abstract

The surface of hot-rolled steel sheet is treated, e.g. for protection against corrosion, by plating it with Ni, Cr, Sn, Cu, Zn or Al, cold-rolling the plated steel sheet, annealing the cold-rolled sheet and further plating and/or painting the annealed sheet. For example, a hot-rolled steel sheet 2 mm. thick, acid-washed with H2SO4 solution, may be plated with Ni 1 micron thick using a Watts bath consisting of 250 g./l. NiSO4, 45 g./l. NiCl2 and 30 g./l. H3BO3 and a current density of 5A/dm.2, cold-rolled to 0.2 mm. thick, electrically cleaned to remove hydrogen, box-annealed at 680 DEG C. for 1 hour, tempered and again cold-rolled with 1.5% reduction, prior to plating or painting. Hot-rolled steel sheets plated with Sn 0.5 micron thick or Cu 0.25 micron thick may be cold-rolled with 80% reduction, annealed at 670 DEG C. for 1 hour, prior to being tempered and cold-rolled.
