Abstract
915,426. Protecting metal surfaces electrolytically. YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. May 27, 1959 [May 30, 1958], No. 18128/59. Class 41. Metal surfaces are protected and made corrosion-resistant by treating cathodically with an electrolyte containing chromic anhydride, phosphoric acid and either Zn, Mg, Mn or Ca ions, e.g. added as oxides to form a phosphate. It is stated that the protective coating includes metal phosphate and chromium chromate formed by reducing action of hydrogen generated at the metal surface. Electrolysis is effected at 10-300 A.S.F. at 10 to 80 C. for about 1 second. The treated metal surface which may be of steel, non-ferrous metal or zinc-coated metal, is then dried in a current of air at 100 to 200 C. for a few minutes.
