Abstract
1,020,558. Travelling-wave tubes. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. April 3, 1964 [April 4, 1963], No. 13778/64. Heading H1D. A permanent magnet system for electron beam tubes, e.g. travelling-wave tubes is capable of being divided into two portions to permit insertion and removal of the tube in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the tube, an adjustable part of the magnet system having two sliders one on each of the portions which are interconnected by a flexible coupling which maintains a fixed relationship between the relative positions of the sliders. The sliders are of soft iron and slide across the poles of magnets, and serve to adjust the pilot field which precedes the main magnetic field so as to enable the ready interchange of tubes with slightly differing characteristics. The sliders are mounted on screws coupled by a flexible shaft; rotation of one of the screws enables the sliders to maintain symmetry with respect to the tube axis by moving the slides an equal but opposite distance. The two portions are connected by a hinge, and the main field may be poriodic. In an alternative construction the screw-threaded spindles are replaced by square shafts, the sliders being interconnected by a flexible cable such as a Bowden cable.
