Abstract
1,031,844. Travelling wave tubes. NIPPON ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 19, 1963 [April 25, 1962], No. 15481/63. Heading H1D. A magnetic focusing system for an axially directed electron beam, e.g. in a travelling wave tube, includes a first hollow permanent magnet 121, Fig. 1 (not shown), for providing a uniform magnetic field along a first portion of the electron beam axis and an inherent leakage field extending axially beyond the ends of the magnet and oppositely directed to the field within the first portion, a second hollow magnet arrangement 13 of annular periodic permanent magnets 131, 132, 133, 134 separated by polepieces 136, 137, 138, and a wave coupling member 14 extending transversely across the electron beam axis between the two magnet arrangements, wherein a polepiece 123 separates the first magnet from the wave coupling member and an annular skirt 124 extends externally over a portion of the first magnet, the end magnet of the second magnet arrangement is magnetized in a direction such that its field in the wave coupling structure is aided by the leakage field, and a magnetic shunt 15 extends externally of the wave coupling member between the last mentioned polepiece 123 and the polepiece 136 of the second magnet arrangement which separates the end magnet 131 from its neighbour 132. The skirt is apertured for reception of a waveguide forming the wave coupling member.
