Abstract

1,083,451. Seals; pipe couplings. ALLIED IRON FOUNDERS Ltd. March 10, 1964 [March 11, 1963], No. 9508/63. Headings F2B and F2G. In a pipe joint, the space between a metal (e.g. cast iron) socket 3 and a plastics (e.g. P.V.C.) spigot 4 is sealed by means of a substantially cylindrical resilient sleeve 1 provided with one or more pairs of internal and external peripheral protuberances 2, which are compressed between the spigot and the socket, and with a retaining flange 5 or 6 at or towards its outer end for engagement with the socket to prevent linear or concertina movement of the sleeve with respect to the socket upon insertion of the spigot into the sleeve. In Fig. 2, the flange 5 abuts against the end 5a of the socket whereas in Fig. 3 the flange 6, which is rounded, lies within a groove 7 in the socket. The inner end 8 of the sleeve is dimensioned to sealingly engage the spigot. The sleeve may be of rubber or plastics.
