Abstract

1359525 Pipe couplings; joint-making packing INDUSTRIELE ONDERNEMING WAVINNV 24 Aug 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 39669/71 Headings F2G and F2B A pipe spigot 8 is received in a socket formed at the end of another pipe 1 and held in a friction fit by the lip 14<SP>1</SP> of a seal ring 14. The seal ring 14 is retained by a ring 7 which abuts an annular step surface 13 in the socket bore and defines a cavity within a widened portion 4 of the socket to accommodate the seal. In one embodiment, as shown, the retaining ring 7 has a skirt portion 7<SP>1</SP> having slots 17 which impart sufficient resiliency to the skirt to enable the ring to be inserted past a narrowed mouth portion 12 of the socket. The seal ring may be of rubber and the lip 14<SP>1</SP> is urged by the inserted pipe 8 into a widened part 2 of the socket so as to grip both the socket inside surface and the pipe 8. The socket and ring 7 may be of blowmoulded polyvinylchloride. In another embodiment, the retaining ring has a cylindrical portion (28) (Fig. 3, not shown) which engages the socket mouth behind an inturned lip (27) thereof, whilst at the end of the ring engaging the seal (23), an outwardly directed flange (31) ensures a narrower passage to prevent displacement of the seal from its cavity.
