Abstract

Images are formed by (i) exposing by application of pressure a photographic film having contiguous unfogged outer and inner silver halide emulsion layers, the grains of the inner emulsion layer being of the internal image type, so as to form a latent image in the outer emulsion layer, (ii) developing the outer layer to a silver image and (iii) treating the exposed material with an aqueous solution containing an image-producing agent e.g. a fogging agent for the inner emulsion layer, which diffuses selectively through the exposed areas of the exposed and developed outer emulsion layer to the inner emulsion layer, the exposure and sensitivity of the inner emulsion layer being such that after the exposure and development of the outer layer less than 1/10 of the available silver halide in the inner layer in areas corresponding to the exposed areas in the outer layer is developed. In the examples the image producing agent used in stage (iii) may be an aqueous solution containing (1) an anion which forms a silver salt less soluble in water than part at least of the silver halide in either of the emulsion layers e.g. KBr, K1 or Na2S (2) an antifoggant e.g. 2-mercapto-thiazoline, the lower layer being developed with a fogging agent e.g. thiourea (3) a fogging agent e.g. thiourea and 2-and 4-hydroxybenzylidene rhodanine. (4) anionic dyes which diffuse into and are mordanted by the inner emulsion layer. (5) 2-mercapto-4-phenylthiazole followed by treatment with a fixer. Any silver halide images formed may be toned. Steps (ii) and (iii) may be combined and the outer emulsion layer may be removed after stage (iii).
