Abstract
Process comprises (a) catalytically hydrotreating the heavy hydrocarbons at 340-450 degrees C (maximising hydrogenation of fused ring aromatics, minimising crakcing); and then (b) further, catalytically hydrotreating at 230-370 degrees C (to remove NH3, H2S and /or light hydrocarbons). Catalyst for step (a) is a Gp. VIB or VIII metal (or its oxide or sulphide) pref. with an amorphous (non-zeolitic) support opt. contg. a minor amount of zeolite; catalyst for step (b) is an alumino-silicate zeolite supported Gp. VIB or VIII metal (or its oxide or sulphide). Catalytic metals in both stages are pref. Co, Mo, Ni and/or W. Conditions in both stages are 105-350 Kg/cm2 pressure, and LHSV 0.1-10.0.
