Abstract

A process for re-refining used engine-lubricating oils or used industrial oils containing engine-lubricating oils comprises the steps of prepurifying the used lubricating oil with a coagulating agent and/or by distillation under vacuum and subjecting the pre-purified used lubricating oil to catalytic hydrogenation under a pressure of 15 to 50 atm., at a temperature of 280 DEG to 380 DEG C., with a space velocity of 0.5 to 2.0 litre/litre/hour and with a gas-liquid ratio 2.0 litre/litre/hour and with a gas-liquid ratio of 10 to 120 Nm3/m3 in the presence of a hydrorefinin catalyst; and, if desired, fractionating the re-refined oil thus obtained. Suitable catalysts include nickel oxide and molybdenum oxide on alumina optionally with ferric oxide and silica; the catalyst may be presulphided. ferric oxide and silica; the catalyst may be presulphided.
