Brave Express Might Gaine marks the fourth chapter of the Brave Series, which spanned from 1990 to 1999, with later sequels and reboots like Betterman and GaoGaiGar Final: Grand Glorious Gathering extending into the early 2000s.

The story centers on Maito Senpuhji, a billionaire and the head of the Senpuhji Concern, who manages his empire alongside his friend Hamada, his assistant Izumi, and his grandfather. To combat giant criminal robots and other dangers, Maito deploys Might Gaine, a formidable super-robot, backed by the Brave Express—a squad of train-themed transforming robots. Together, they work to thwart a variety of threats. The first season (episodes 1-26) largely follows a "monster of the week" structure, but it remains engaging with a thread of intrigue woven into Maito’s backstory. This season also unveils the show’s key antagonists, including the unhinged scientist Professor Wolfgang, the cunning thief Catherine Vuitton—a millionaire with a Catwoman vibe, accompanied by her butler Audrey—and the mafia boss Hoi Kow Loh with his aide Shinja. The standout villain, however, is Ace no Joe (aka Joe the Ace), a former military mecha pilot whose skills rival Maito’s. Joe’s brooding, enigmatic nature and compelling arc make him a highlight, especially in season two, where his dynamic with Wolfgang adds a gripping layer to the narrative.

Might Gaine shines in many ways. While it’s not the pinnacle of the Brave Series and occasionally dips into cheesiness, it delivers a consistently enjoyable experience. It’s a strong entry in the franchise, and I’d recommend it without hesitation.
