I'm admittedly not a big fan of isekai. In my opinion, a handful of shows did the concept justice, and the past decade or so of attempting to emulate their success has been a fruitless effort.
Season one of Spirit chronicles, however flawed, had a decent enough premise, as to bring forward something enjoyable, that stood out in the sea of isekai, without being ridden with gimmicks. It got me invested , and I was looking forward to a second season.
The TLDR in case you don't want to read my full list of issues:
It committed the biggest sins of writing: ignoring obvious story beats, without replacing them with plot twists or subversion of any kind; having anticipation be left unanswered; making the protagonist boring; making the villain boring.
Season one did the following really well:
-Setting up exposition
-Making us like the protagonist, and get invested in his journey
-Had a good mix of intriguing antagonist, as well as caricature villains the audience cold love to hate
-Paced the culmination in an enjoyable way
Season two, however, failed at all of the same points:
-The exposition suffered from poor pacing, which made getting attached to the new characters hard
-The protagonist was watered down this season, and repeatedly failed at rewarding the audience, due to not landing some potentially great emotional beats
-The intrigue of the mysterious antagonist was lost. The returning snobs we loved to hate weren't handled well, losing the charm of watching them get their eventual comeuppance.
-The "new" villain, who was set up for a very exciting and emotional battle, got overshadowed by poor animation, dialogue pacing, hindered further by the way the protagonist was portrayed this season. So, there was no exciting finale to this season, despite great potential.
The story touched upon only one thread from the previous season, and did not let the characters properly address their feelings and talk about the biggest, most exciting event from the finale of the previous season.
