TL;DR: Read this if you like good action scenes.
Do not be fooled by the title, this manga is not just your average power fantasy throw away series. This manga really goes for it. The story follows Beryl, who is an instuctor at a dojo in a small vlllage. Beryl gets scouted by one of his old disciples, who has made it quite far in her swordsmanship career, to be an instructor for the knights. We see how Beryl, convinced of his own incompetence, settles into this position and how his reputation as the unknown backwater swordsmaster gets him into all kinds of situations.
The premise is very cliche. But the way this manga does it is anything but. What stands out immediately is how likeable the characters are, Beryl is not just your standard OP protagonist. He is much older than most protagonists and the manga actually takes this seriously. He is portrayed as an instructor type character. What the story also takes seriously is why people in the story like or look up to him. He is shown to genuinely be a great mentor and person. The other characters, both the side characters and the antogonists are interesting as well. They all have their own believable motivations that the reader can sympathize with.
But the true highlight is the action. This manga has some really well drawn and cool fight scenes. It is probably one of the best manga I have ever read in terms of having fights that the reader can actually follow along with. Each fight is just so fun and the moments that stand out are really cool, there is always a satisfying climax and part of the reason for this is that these scenes are paced really well. The fights usually last half a chapter if that, and you can really tell that a lot of attention was paid to the swordplay. Whether it makes any sense or not I couldn't tell you but it seems very believable and it is very constent.
The story is nothing special, but even here there is a quality that is not normally seen in works like this. Each event is concise and clearly explained. Nothing drags and it is always kept interesting. Character development is done through brief moments in fights and not through drawn out conversations or training arcs and backstories are usually wrapped up in a few pages.
Overall I would really recommend this manga. It is a super fun and surprisingly engaging read. Here is to hoping that the anime can afford the same kind of attention the action scenes.
