"The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely. All art is quite useless."
Thanks for visiting my profile. I like watching, reading, and playing all sorts of media. I love football, music and Jesus. That's a decent summary. If you like any works I like, especially if you're a fan of Disco Elysium and Before Your Eyes(video games), then send me a friend request, and let's talk about nerdy shi. Cuz art connects people. Or sumn corny like that.
My first anime was Beyblade. I don't remember much of it, and my only memory of watching it is about when I was about 4-5 years old. I was half-asleep or sumn when I fell from a chair and bruised my jaw. Weird ass core memory. My real first anime was DBS, it was rlly fun. What got me into the medium was MHA tho. I watched it when I was 12. And, I've been into animanga ever since. I'm not sure that if I would love MHA if I watched it for the first time again as I am right now. But it moved a younger me, so I appreciate it for that. My favourite genre of music is Hiphop. Ig I like alternative rock, and R&B, and whatever genre 'A New Kind of Love' falls into. My favourite celebrity ig is Neymar Jr, cuz honestly I don't think even Van Gogh could paint anything as beautiful as Neymar playing football.
These days I'm slowly getting addicted to romcoms, or rather, anything with romance. Sad times out here.
It's only recently I've begun to art as inherently subjective and non-communicative. It's only there to express, and any meaning the self derives from what is experienced is begotten from the individual's beliefs, morals, and circumstances. People bonding and finding beauty in something so divisive and subjective, I find that really cool. Sometimes, I'm just hella bored or desire a lil escape from reality. Reading, watching, observing. These actions help time pass by. And once in a while, I find something really special while doing that. The scores I give anime or manga don't really matter. I find value in most art. Because an artist put a piece of themselves in that work; they expressed what they thought beautiful and/or meaningful, and that connected deeply with someone. Bonus points if it connects with me personally. Imma be real tho, I'm still gonna call what I find lacklustre 'mid'. Because I can. My scores are somewhat harsh. Its only harsh because I want to set apart what I really love from anything and everything else.
I rate works within their own medium. What I consider a nearly exceptional movie and a nearly exceptional anime series isn't relative, given the length both respectively had to craft their narratives and characters. I'm harsher on the latter—the medium I probably give the harshest scores to are novels—simply because it usually has more time. But I can also acknowledge when something is incredibly long and yet extremely consistent.
It's just hard to compare mediums with very varied elements and lengths.
A general summary for how I critique media is:
Impact/Enjoyment>>Themes/Purpose>= Characters> Plot> Production/Art/Prose/Gameplay
I like to think that first and foremost, art is made with the intent to fascinate. Being fascinated by whatever is experienced is what is most important, because all art is good for is to be adored. Usually, good to masterful execution of the technical and narratival components of a story are what captivates me. So, to me at least, it makes it all impressive when a story that is heavily flawed and messy resonates with me, and I consider works like this(MHA, Nisekoi) equal or relative to what I view to coherent and well written stories(7/10). I do rlly try to separate what I view as brilliant(8-10) from the rest, but I have outliers(Your Name, Solo Leveling), where very personal reasons, or it being one of the best viewing/reading experiences I've ever had, makes it relative to works I consider exceptional. If I were to do an anime list, I would place Your Name higher than Baccano, not because I think Your Name is better written, but because viewing Your Name for the first time was just really really 'magical', and Baccano in comparision, was not, and personally, is just a really decent anime and nothing more.
Works that do ultimately fail to captivate me, as well as lack techincal prowess and finesse or contain very deplorable qualities intermingled with excellence(Nisemonogatari), or contain equally subpar and good parts are what I consider mediocre, or worse, bad. They are some bad anime I find so comical that its entertaining—Hametsu no Mars; Masamune kun no revenge—but finding something entertaining because its ridiculously bad, and not because I connect with it isn't cause to give it a decent score. Enjoyment/impact is the most important factor, but its still only a factor.
The more exceptional and impactful sumn is, the higher the score(from 6—9). Then what are 'masterpieces' then? I don't believe in truly flawless narratives, and so works I see as really masterful and profound, that deeply connects with me, and impact my way of viewing things are what I regard as the closest thing to masterpieces. Those are my 10/10s
Vinland Saga
"That sky, and the sun. The mountains. The world. God's creation has so much beauty woven through it, but in the human soul, is there no love?"
well-written review, it will age well for all the people hating on it. usually, negative reviews on a highly-rated show are from corny ass bitches who think they're cool for disliking the thing which society likes. rare to see a well-written negative review.
although I liked the solo levelling anime fair enough, I liked your review a lot. haven't read the manhwa but I totally get what you mean.
the people glazing it are crazy and the people hating on it are crazy as well. it's a pretty fun show just to binge-watch , no epic character development or shit but you just enjoy watching it
Bro aint no way you dropped Tatami Galaxy 😭
I get that not everyone likes artistic shows, I was also like that once. I'd recommend watching it in future after you have gained some experience with artistic anime. It's a masterpiece, trust.
