86 on the surface level just fulfils basic requirements of Mecha anime grounded in real/alternate history. But whearas Code Geass is cool, 86 tells an actual story about actual people. It's especially visible in second season as the story displays an immense emotional intelligence. It's not in the interaction between characters, it's not in the story behind the war, it's not about individual sacrifice, or hopes and dreams, or abandoned children, or war memorials, none of that. All those moments are meaningless unless there's one core element that's almost never present in media. What was that one thing that recontextualized the whole story?

I played the game and I watched adaptation in the hopes it would be a similar experience. Of course I knew some things would differ, but small details are not my concern. A skip here or there, avoiding pointless dialogue, that would be ok.
However the entire anime was rushed. Instead of translating a single game into a single season, two games were merged. 2 cases were entirely skipped, one major, many facts have been hidden or changed. It was annoying to say the least. But this was bearable untill the very last case in which everything was changed, characters, story, facts, even ending. For what? ... |
